Norman Longworth, a pre-eminent advocate for learning cities and lifelong learning, was 90 on 19th March 2026, and on the 21st March I was very pleased to be amongst those who celebrated this special anniversary in Southampton. Norman regaled us with many stories of his upbringing in Bolton, where amongst others Ian McKellen, the actor, was one of his contemporaries. We also heard of his path from IBM education to becoming a UNESCO Chair at the University of Southampton. Of course in PASCAL he will be remembered for many of the projects on learning cities within which he was involved and often led, including R3L Indicators, LILARA, PENR3L and Eurolocal, which laid foundations for the development of learning city metrics. Much of this work is available at this link. Many members of PASCAL sent their tributes to Norman by video or through messages, and the event itself was splendidly organised by Norman's wife Maggie, and others within the family. We wish them all continued lifelong learning.
