Border Thinking in Contemporary Museum Education: Crossing Borders through Heritage Practice

  • 14th September 2026 9:30-12.30
  • Boyd Orr Building Room 407, University of Glasgow, G12 8QQ

A museum is a contact zone and heritage practice. It is a way to help people cross borders: between communities and institutions, expert knowledge and lived experience, local heritage and transnational memory. This symposium brings together students, researchers, museum educators, heritage practitioners and community partners to explore how museums can respond to an increasingly polarised world and a mobile society. Through the lens of border thinking, the symposium will consider possible pathways towards more inclusive museum futures. During the presentations, a mini-gallery and discussion, there will be reflections about how contemporary museum education can support ethical collaboration, intercultural dialogue and more inclusive forms of cultural participation.
